What Factors Affect Hydrovac Pricing?

Every hydrovac job is unique. In other words, a small potholing job in a Calgary backyard is not the same as frozen ground excavation in February. The following factors affect what you’ll pay:

Job Duration

We bill hourly so the size and complexity of your job affects pricing the most. A simple utility daylighting might take an hour or two tops while a deep trenching job for a sewer or water line repair can take a full day.

Soil Conditions

Calgary has clay-heavy soil and frozen winter ground might take longer to excavate than soft, dry earth. Frozen ground excavation has the same hourly rate, but the job will take longer in deep winter when the frost line runs four to six feet down.

Volume of Debris

Our hydrovac debris removal cost is part of the disposal fee ($0.15 per kilogram of soil and water hauled away). Deeper, wider excavations  require us to dispose of more material legally at an approved facility.

Distance from Truck to Work Site

If the excavation area is more than 25 feet from where our hydrovac truck can park, we can charge an additional $120 per hour to cover the extra 6″ hose, labour and setup. This is common in backyard with narrow side gates, tight commercial lots or excavation behind homes with no rear lane access.

Travel Distance

Jobs further from Central Calgary require more travel time. Travel is billable. For example, a job in Airdrie or Okotoks includes the drive time both ways.

Fuel Costs

A 15% fuel surcharge is added to all hydrovac jobs to cover the diesel needed to run the vacuum and pressurized water system.

Do Calgary Companies Charge Per Hour?

Yes, hourly billing is industry standard for hydrovac services in Calgary. Most companies including Mr. Mike’s Plumbing charge per hour. That’s because every job is different and it’s important to account for how soil conditions, depth, debris volume and access can affect the duration of the job.

Some hourly rates look low, but these companies often tack on hidden fees after the job is done. We list potential upcharges here so you aren’t surprised when you get your bill.

Is Hydrovac More Expensive Than Traditional Excavation?

Yes, hydrovac has a higher rate than backhoe or shovel excavation. That said, it’s the more cost-effective option in Calgary. Let’s talk about why.

Traditional excavation is quicker on open ground, but risks hitting a buried gas line, water main or fibre cable, which can cost thousands and trigger utility company fines. Hydrovac uses pressurized water and vacuum to safely expose underground utilities, which is why it’s ideal for daylighting near gas, electrical and telecom lines.

For potholing, utility locating and any work near infrastructure, hydrovac is the smarter and more affordable option in the long run.

What's Included in a Hydrovac Quote from Mr. Mike's Plumbing?

When you request a hydrovac quote in Calgary from us, it includes:

– Estimated hourly time on site
Disposal fee based on expected debris volume
– Fuel surcharge (15%)
Extended access charges if applicable
– Travel time estimate
– Any project-specific considerations (frozen ground, deep excavation, tight access, etc.)

We give you a price before the work begins. If conditions change mid-job (i.e. soil harder than expected), we stop, communicate the change and get your approval before continuing.

When Hydrovac is Worth the Investment

Hydrovac excavation pays itself over time if you consider the price of damaging buried utilities or causing structural damage with traditional digging. We use hydrovac for:

– Potholing and daylighting to safely expose buried utilities
Utility locating before construction or landscaping
– Frozen ground excavation when traditional methods can’t break through
– Trenching for water, sewer or gas lines
– Debris removal from confined or sensitive areas
– Slot trenching alongside foundations or near trees

Frequently Asked Questions About Hydrovac Pricing in Calgary

How much does hydrovac cost per hour in Calgary?

Mr. Mike’s Plumbing charges $260 per hour for hydrovac excavation in Calgary. Travel time and dump time are also billable. A 15% fuel surcharge and a $0.15 per kg disposal fee also apply.

Our disposal fee is $0.15 per kilogram of debris hauled for your site. This fee covers transport and legal disposal at an approved facility.

Hydrovac trucks use a decent amount of diesel fuel to operate the vacuum and pressurized water systems. The 15% fuel surcharge offsets variable fuel costs and keeps base hourly predictable.

We require a credit card to be on file before starting work. Payment is processed at the end of each day for work completed that day. With multi-day jobs, you are billed daily rather than all at once.

Residential potholing jobs take 1-3 hours. Larger trenching or excavation projects often take a full day or more depending on the soil conditions, depth and access. Frozen ground during our dreaded Calgary winters takes longer than summer excavation.

Hydrovac has a higher hourly rate than backhoe digging, but is more cost-effective in the long run. It eliminates the risk of damaging buried gas, water or telecom lines. Otherwise, you end up paying thousands and delaying your project even further.

Yes, hydrovac can excavate Calgary’s frozen ground safely. The pressurized hot water cuts through frost and the vacuum removes debris. Frozen ground jobs take longer, but are billed at the same hourly rate.

We give you a quote before we start working and honour it as long as conditions match what was estimated. If something like deeper-than-expected utilities or harder soil comes up, we stop, explain the price change and get your approval before continuing.
